Why was Asbestos Used?
Asbestos is a set of six naturally occurring minerals that were mined and used in many different products for their desirable physical properties. The inhalation of asbestos fibres can cause serious illnesses, including lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis. Long exposure to high concentrations of asbestos fibres is likely to cause health problems. The European Union has banned all use of asbestos and extraction, manufacture and processing of asbestos products. The three main types of asbestos used commonly in buildings constructed or refurbished between the 1950s-1980s are :-
CROCIDOLITE (BLUE)
AMOSITE (BROWN)
CHRYSOTILE(WHITE)
Asbestos became increasingly popular among manufacturers and builders in the late 19th century because of its sound absorption, strength, and its resistance to fire, heat, electrical and chemical damage. Asbestos can usually be found in floor tiles, roof sheets, soffits, cement boards, down pipes and guttering, artex, pipe insulation, steel insulation, insulation boards, ceiling tiles and gaskets to name a few.
Building owners have a legal responsibility to locate, identify and manage the asbestos present in their property. It is good practice to remove asbestos material that is in poor condition, likely to harm the public or prior to any demolition or refurbishment work.
